Kitchen Re Design Before and After
As it turns out you can’t go wrong with a before and after post. It is satisfying to see a finished project, especially when you don’t have to endure the lead times and drywall dust!
This particular project is more than a simple main floor reno, it required city permits, engineering sign off, and a good contractor. We removed a load bearing wall to create an open concept kitchen to fit a long island and to change the functionality of the kitchen and adjoining rooms. This type of job requires planning and proper construction drawings which usually means a design professional
The footprint of the house was the obstacle we had to overcome, the original square kitchen was enclosed with an opening to the dining room and living in the room beside. By taking out the (load bearing) wall a room that was never utilized, shy of a formal family dinner, was opened up. This allowed for the kitchen to get pushed into that area to make up for lost cabinet space, and to make the room more rectangular, which in turn allows for a linear island with ample seating, which we all know is perfect for entertaining… have they figured out the psychology behind why people gravitate to the kitchen yet??
The corner sink was relocated to the island – along with the dishwasher and microwave, which makes for cleaner esthetics and makes for a functional work triangle.
The dining and living room are now opened up to the main living spaces, and now are much more likely to be used as the old adage out of sight out of mind, is not just a saying…
The light flooring and white cabinets are grounded with the use of a bold backsplash colour and offsetting the island in a contrast grey. The quartz counters and shaker style doors are classic in style and keep the whole look from becoming too modern. The clients had loved antiques and pieces to be incorporated so the finishes, although simple, are meant to be neutral to allow those pieces to look updated and fresh.
I really suggest using a design professional to help in an in-depth renovation project like this. The number one concern I always hear from people who haven’t worked with a designer is they can’t afford it, or it isn’t in the budget. The number one thing that all my past clients have mentioned is how much the design exceeded their expectations. Not once have I heard of a client look back and say they wish they didn’t invest in the design.
